Neuburg an der Donau

The former capital of the “Young Palatinate” has a centuries-long history of success and is now regarded, with its population of around 28,000, as a modern, up-and-coming regional centre. This historic Renaissance town is nestled between the rolling hills of the Jura and the Donaumoos, the largest lowland moor in southern Germany. The Danube is both a companion and a lifeline, winding its way through the heart of the town, past the impressive old town ensemble. A rich and eventful history, a cultural scene renowned far beyond the region, a diverse culinary scene, and innovative companies – some of which are even known worldwide – are the hallmarks of Neuburg an der Donau.

Neuburg and its rich history

Neuburg is – as one can see for oneself in the Upper Old Town – a historic town. As one of Bavaria’s oldest towns, Neuburg has had an eventful history. The first settlements date back to the beginning of the last Ice Age. In Roman times, Neuburg was known as Venaxamodurum. However, Neuburg enjoyed its heyday as the capital of the Principality of the Young Palatinate (1505–1808) during the reign of Count Palatine Ottheinrich. A striking testament to this era is our wonderful Upper Old Town, which fortunately remained largely spared from destruction during the Second World War, despite the fact that a military airfield had existed in Neuburg-Zell since 1934. The town of Neuburg began urban regeneration very early on as part of urban development funding (1971), meaning that the majority of the historic monuments have been preserved and Neuburg can thus boast one of the most beautiful and monumental old town ensembles in Bavaria.

Neuburg is a lovely place to live – Leisure

Leisure in Neuburg an der Donau means experiencing and enjoying yourself all year round. Whether you’re getting active in one of the more than 200 clubs or visiting as a guest, you’re sure to get your money’s worth. Neuburg an der Donau and its diverse range of events have carried the name of the ‘Ottheinrichstadt’ far beyond the town’s borders. Whether it’s the historic castle festival with over 100,000 visitors, the open-air performance of the Bavarian ‘Jedermann’, the pottery market, Baroque concerts or the summer academy – to name but a few. Furthermore, this tradition-conscious little town has also established itself as a very special event destination. In no other municipality in the entire region are both Bayerischer Rundfunk and Germany’s most successful radio station, Antenne Bayern, such frequent and welcome guests as they are in Neuburg. And so the people of Neuburg have now become accustomed to the town being filled every year with a wide variety of major events attracting visitors from all over Bavaria. ‘Visiting friends’ is not just a phrase used in Neuburg during a World Cup.

Finally, it goes without saying that Neuburg an der Donau also offers all the amenities of a modern regional centre, such as two large water parks and family swimming pools.
